Oktoberfest celebration
We are proud of our German traditions at Martin Luther Homes. This includes, of course, the annual celebration of the ‘Oktoberfest’. As an organisation with its roots in the German community and culture, this is even more reason to properly acknowledge this popular cultural event.
Both our retirement village as well as aged care facility celebrated Oktoberfest in style this year. There were plenty of German snacks, music and of course beer. Some of our staff and guests dressed up in ‘Dirndls’ and ‘Lederhosen’. In our beautifully decorated makeshift beer halls, our residents had so much fun singing or humming along the music. Some even got up and danced together with our staff. One could also see some ‘schunkeln’, a popular thing to do at the Oktoberfest where everyone links their arms and sway from side to side together.
Our staff also prepared a special Oktoberfest quiz where our residents were able to learn more about the world’s largest Volksfest (folks festival). Especially our German seniors went down memory lane. They enjoyed sharing their stories with others and singing along their favourite German songs.
All in all, it was a very joyous celebration and our residents and staff had lots of fun. Everyone is already looking forward to repeating it next year when it is time again to say: “O’zapft is!”.
