Our Premier, Daniel Andrews, has summarised it quite well “this is a winter like no other”. This applies to our life here at Martin Luther Homes, as much as it does to anyone else currently living under Stage 3 Restrictions in metropolitan Melbourne.
Nevertheless, not much has changed at Martin Luther Homes, we have plenty of activities happening, and there are now even more services on offer to keep you connected through digital means. In fact, we are now offering a new free rental service. You will also find out more about Tanya from Activities who grew up in South Africa.

After spending many years in the corporate world where she focused on risk management, the Boronia local has decided to change careers and follow her calling to spend more time with older people. As you can see in the pre-lockdown photo with Helga, Tanya especially enjoys spending time with our residents one on one. And, her absolute favourite activity is to travel back in time and learn more about the old days and ways through the stories that we all have to share. Before moving to Australia 17 years ago, Tanya grew up in South Africa. In her spare time, she is a yoga teacher, and she can also tell you a lot more about her Buddhist faith where compassion plays a very important role. Tanya even understands a bit of German, after all, her grandfather was born in Austria, where, as the song goes, ‘the hills are alive’! So join us in welcoming Tanya at Martin Luther Homes.

Video chats have become a weekly highlight for many of our residents over recent months. We strongly encourage families and friends to stay in touch via the internet. To find out more about some new options, take a look at our new Digital Device Rental program.

While our Activities Staff are already doing a great job in getting you connected, we would also like to encourage residents to take advantage of this free rental offer during times of lockdown and social isolation. As the device will stay with you, there is less physical contact and the device is all yours for the rental period. This opportunity has been made available by a grant from Be Connected!

How does it work? If you are interested in a long-term tablet rental from us, please call 0481 309 812 or let our Activities Team know, and Oliver, our tech man, will get in touch with you.
Are people in the Retirement Village eligible? If you don’t have your own device and you need support to stay in touch with loved ones via the internet, please don’t hesitate to contact Oliver on 0481 309 812.
Do I need my own internet connection? Not necessarily.
What are the limitations? Please understand that, during heightened restrictions, we may not be able to provide the service immediately.

More Safety but still the same fun
Michael from Activities felt a bit like Zorro on his first day of wearing a face mask in early July but it only took a short time for him, and everyone else, to get used to it. As you might have heard on the news, the Coronavirus can spread without people even knowing that they have caught it. And it is this community transmission, especially from people who don’t show any symptoms, that makes it so dangerous. Therefore, masks for our staff are just another precaution we take to keep our residents safe. By the way, Ruth gave Michael no chance during their last Connect Four session.
